Many currents, one canon
The Bhagavad Gītā occupies seven hundred verses on the first day of an eighteen-day war. To stand at that midpoint is also to stand at the meeting of much longer stories — Viṣṇu's descents through the four yugas, the life of Kṛṣṇa, the long inheritance of the Kuru house, the eighteen chapters of the dialogue itself, the parallel narrative of Rāma told by Vālmīki, the compilation of the Vedic and Upaniṣadic śruti, and the systematic sūtra literature and six darśanas that frame all of it.
